As student government leader, MBA works to enhance experience, opportunities for classmates
When Alisha Vij arrived at Rutgers Business School from India, she was excited and nervous, but soon felt at home, thanks to her cohort of Full-Time MBA students.
“You build a community within your cohort because you spend so much time with your classmates,” said Vij, a second-year Rutgers MBA student who will graduate in May 2025. “The journey with my diverse classmates has been very exciting and enriching in its own way.”
Vij decided to attend Rutgers Business School because of its reputation, strong alumni network and close proximity to New York City. “I instantly knew this would be a dream school for me,” she said.
She chose a concentration in marketing because she had worked in marketing positions with luxury consumer product brands in Dubai and India. While her career began in a banking position, she felt drawn to marketing as a way to connect with consumers. “It was a natural fit for me,” she said.
Another fit for Vij was leadership within Rutgers Student Government Association, where she serves as president. “As the SGA president, my role is to act as a bridge between the graduate programs and the student body, ensuring that students’ voices are not only heard but also translated into meaningful action that enhance their experiences at the school,” Vij said.
Vij plays an active role organizing initiatives, such as a peer mentoring program, networking events and webinars about finding internships. She enjoys working with other students to tackle different challenges and create opportunities for growth. “It is more than a title,” Vij said. “It is a commitment to my peers to enhance their MBA journey. It allows me to advocate for what the student needs are and create a sense of belonging, and opportunities.”
Assistant Dean of MBA Programs Marc Limata said Vij inspires her peers with her drive and determination, while always offering support.
“Alisha Vij has proven herself to be an outstanding leader and an invaluable member of the Rutgers MBA community,” Limata said. “As the president of the Student Government Association (SGA), she has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, fostering collaboration, inclusivity, and a strong sense of community among students.”
During the summer, Vij landed an internship through a mentor who she met through Rutgers Business School. She participated in a case competition that allowed her to work closely with Joe Slota, who mentored the team and connected her with 1stLine Partners. Vij worked as a brand protection project manager with the consulting company, which specializes in serving pharmaceutical companies. Because the company is a startup, Vij found she had abundant opportunities such as interacting directly with clients.
Vij hopes to stay in the tristate area after graduation and work in a job where she can continue growing and learning. She plans to leverage what she has learned while pursuing a Rutgers MBA. “The program has pushed me in ways I never thought possible,” she said. “It’s given me the tools to grow, both personally and professionally.”
