Company tour enriches business studies for visiting students from Taiwan

Fifteen students from Taiwan’s Tunghai University spent nearly two weeks at Rutgers Business School this summer learning about U.S. entrepreneurship and innovation.

The visit culminated with a visit to Hermann Services, a family-owned business led by Rutgers Executive MBA alumnus Jeffrey Hermann. During the visit, the students, who were accompanied by a professor and university staff member, learned about the company’s history, its current business, its commitment to community engagement and its future challenges.

The students had an opportunity to learn about the differences between conventional diesel trucks and new electric-powered trucks, and they got a demonstration of how a 20-meter shipping container is loaded and prepared for transport.

“The trip to Hermann Services was intended to introduce students to small- and mid-size businesses and their crucial role for the U.S. economy both at the national level as well as at the community level,” said Dietrich Tschanz, assistant dean, Rutgers Business School International Programs and assistant director, International Student Recruitment and Advising.

“I’m sure the students now have a much better understanding of the trucking industry and its importance for the American and, more broadly, global economy,” Tschanz said. In addition to Tschanz, supply chain professors Sundar Raman and Tony Bell accompanied students on the tour.

Before their arrival on the Rutgers campus, the students spent a week sightseeing in New York City, Boston and Washington D.C.

Since Rutgers Business School and Tunghai University’s College of Management signed an agreement in 2019, more than 15 students have enrolled in specialty master’s programs at Rutgers Business School and four students have entered its undergraduate program.

Tunghai University, located in Taichung, Taiwan, is a private Top-30 university, according to the 2024 Center for World University Rankings.
