Brett Gilbert

Dr. Gilbert is an associate professor (with tenure) in the Department of Management and Global Business. Her overarching research interest can be described as seeking to understand the conditions under which new ventures thrive. Dr. Gilbert's dissertation entitled, "The Implications of Geographic Cluster Locations for New Venture Performance" was awarded a Kauffman Dissertation Fellowship in 2004, and was also selected as a finalist for the Entrepreneurship Division's 2005 Heizer Award for outstanding dissertations in entrepreneurship. In 2009, she was a recipient of a $50,000 Kauffman Junior Faculty Fellowship, which is awarded to emerging scholars in the field of entrepreneurship.

Dr. Gilbert's research spans the geographic cluster, alliances, innovation, internationalization and performance streams of literature. Current projects focus on understanding emerging "clean energy" technologies, and the factors that allow these technologies to enter the market. She is also examining emerging technology communities in developing market contexts. Her research is currently published or forthcoming in the Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Research Policy, Small Business Economics Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, and Strategic Management Journal.

Previously, Dr. Gilbert taught a variety of entrepreneurship courses focusing on creativity and innovation and the startup and management of new ventures. At RBS, Dr. Gilbert teaches the Technology Ventures course for undergraduates and graduates, and the PhD seminar in entrepreneurship.

In addition to serving as an associate editor for Small Business Economics Journal, and on the editorial board for the Journal of Business Venturing, Dr. Gilbert has been a reviewer for the Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Research Policy, and Strategic Management Journal. From 2008-2010 she also completed a gubernatorial appointment as an advisory committee member for the Texas Emerging Technology Fund. And she is currently a Representative-At-Large for the Academy of Management Entrepreneurship Division.

Dr. Gilbert received her Ph.D. in Entrepreneurship from Indiana University, and her B.A. in Management from Wittenberg University.
