Public Safety

The mission of the Rutgers-Newark Department of Public Safety is to provide quality services to our diverse community and promote safety and security while safeguarding life and property. The Department will establish and maintain partnerships with the community in responding to and preventing criminal activity while providing an environment conducive to achieving academic excellence.

The centerpiece of the Department is the Rutgers Police Department whose primary responsibility is to protect and serve the Newark Campus community. The Police Department is in operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Department is located at 200 University Avenue, just to the south of Parking Deck I. The Department’s satellite location is located in 1 Washington Park on the 8th floor.

Rutgers Police Officers are commissioned by the State of New Jersey to enforce Criminal and Motor Vehicle Statutes. University Police Officers are armed, and are always in direct radio communication with Police Headquarters. Officers patrol the campus by foot, bicycle, marked, and unmarked police vehicles. The Department has an excellent working relationship with the law enforcement community at the Municipal, County, State and Federal levels. They use the latest in law enforcement technology, such as Radar, LoJack Recovery, and SCIC/NCIC.
