1 Washington Park opens doors to Rutgers Business School

September 22, 2009

When Rutgers Business School (RBS) students arrived for classes this semester, they were in for a treat: a brand new state-of-the-art building and headquarters at 1 Washington Park in Newark, located just a few blocks north of the school’s previous location.

The renovation of the 1 Washington Park building is showcased by a striking glass pavilion with a Times Square-like news ticker scrolling across the outside that dominates the north end of Washington Park on the corner of Broad Street and Washington Street next to the Newark library.

The new pavilion of approximately 15,000 square feet connects the entrance lobby, encompassing an atrium and architectural stairs up to the second and third floor student lounges, with the south side of the main building. The pavilion also features a new RBS trading room and three primary lecture halls ranging from 80-100.

The roof of the pavilion was built as a rooftop garden, and allows for social networking opportunities within the business school. There are also opportunities for the broader Newark community to schedule the use of these spaces.

The new headquarters location promotes the use of mass transit with the Broad Street train station and the Newark Light Rail conveniently located minutes from the building. With these options available, New York City is just a short train ride away.
The first 11 of 17 floors at 1 Washington Park house Rutgers Business School classes, faculty and staff offices, departments, centers, and even has a police substation for added security (located on the 8th floor).

The facilities include undergraduate, MBA, PhD, and executive classrooms and meeting spaces to accommodate the student enrollment of RBS of approximately 3,500 students taking classes in Newark. On top of the two-story entry pavilion is a 12,000 foot rooftop sustainable garden consisting of ornamental grasses and plants for students, faculty, staff, and visitors to enjoy. The remaining floors 12 to 17 are used by local businesses.
