Rutgers Business School Newark undergrads compete in TARGET Case Competition for scholarship prizes
NEWARK, NJ – November 7, 2011 – Rutgers Business School hosted the first annual TARGET store case competition challenging undergraduate students to present how they would combine store and internet sales with the intent on increasing sales. Six teams competed for scholarship money that totaled $2,500 provided by TARGET.
The teams had to each give a 12-minute presentation followed by a five minute Q&A with the TARGET judges answering the case question: How can TARGET improve the relationship between its retail stores and online presence to drive additional sales? Students used videos, SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis, handouts, including fancy presentation books and candy, and many “outside-the-box” ideas, to communicate their ideas. Suggestions ranged from using traveling “red box” TARGET trucks to offering free flu shots.
The winning team, Melissa Chen, Oshanna Daniels and Tim Williams, demonstrated a “genie” approach using a series of iPads located throughout each store to allow customers to inquire about price, colors, available stock or to order items to ship to their home. They received $1,400 in scholarships and were recognized at having the most innovative approach to resolving the case.
“The depth of each team presentation coupled with the professionalism displayed by each team truly impressed the judges,” said Kimberly Dowdy, Senior Field Campus Recruiter for TARGET. Dowdy expects the case competition to become an annual event at Rutgers Business School.
